About the Journal

Quaerentibus is an academic journal that aims to promote critical thinking in the relationship between the natural sciences and theology.

Its primary objective is therefore to encourage informed debate between the natural sciences - and the human sciences in connection with them - and theology of primarily biblical inspiration, using the philosophy of science or epistemology as a critical forum for dialogue. It is thus presented as a publication clearly oriented towards the interdisciplinary "science-theology". Its epistemological framework is therefore that of interdisciplinarity, i.e. the field of encounter between theories formulated by different disciplines, while preserving the principle of respect for the autonomy of each of them. In fact, the sciences and theology, although with different methodologies, have certain points of contact, such as their objects of study. Quaerentibus postulates the need to practice an integrated approach to the complex phenomena of nature, combining the rigorousness historically achieved in the natural sciences as well as in philosophy and theology. This implies that the so-called transdisciplinary treatment, which tends rather towards a fusion of the identity and autonomy of each of the different disciplines of knowledge, will be avoided.

The dialogue will be primarily with biblically rooted theology, i.e. with the systematic and critical reflection of traditions that anchor their beliefs in biblical texts. However, there will also be room for a broader discussion of science and religion, as is often the case in our time. In addition, issues of the traditionally so-called "apologetics" (the existence or non-existence of God on the basis of science) will be raised, albeit in a tangential way. The main focus is on an understanding of religion through the problems opened up by the sciences and a questioning of the scientific scope from the point of view of theological reflection.

Because of the need to find ways to bring science and religion together in everyday life, Quaerentibus will promote the discussion of new lines and instruments of education in the field of religions and their link to the natural sciences. As part of this interest, it will also address the question of the integration of scientific questions into denominational catechetical texts.

The publication will be written in Romance Latin languages (Portuguese, French, Italian, Spanish, Catalan), in order to promote academic discussion on the philosophy and theology of science in countries with a culture originating in Latin, as a channel - hitherto non-existent - for debating this interdisciplinary question in the sphere of our cultures. Without renouncing the Anglo-Saxon contribution in which the debate is currently taking place, an attempt will be made to give priority to the philosophies and theologies of our languages in the treatment of the questions raised by the various sciences, in the awareness that certain themes are analysed in depth only under the idiosyncrasies characteristic of the languages themselves. Even if the languages of Latin origin are different from each other, they maintain a root that allows a certain close understanding of philosophical and theological questions. Quaerentibus wants to promote the search for the nuclei proper to our cultures from which to confront questions that are obviously universal. In any case, and as a way of maintaining open communication with other cultures, the abstracts of the articles will be presented in the neo-Latin language and also in English.

Quaerentibus will initially be published in a digital version.
