Abstract

Isaac Newton’s unification project went far beyond merely unifying the terrestrial and the heavenly worlds. His ultimate goal, as historians of science have shown over the last few decades, was to unify the material and the spiritual worlds. In other words, Newton sought to unify natural philosophy and theology. By doing so, the existence of God would be proved once and for all. Newton eagerly believed that such enterprise was not only possible in theory but feasible. In this paper, I will briefly show the reasons Newton had for pursuing such a kind of unification; how he planned to achieve it, and what were the results of this titanic quest.
